Using the site

You may read, link to and share our pages freely. You may not scrape the site at a scale that degrades it for other readers, republish our summaries wholesale as your own, or use the site to break the law.

Reader contributions

Contributions are voluntary payments made to support our journalism. They are not tax-deductible charitable donations. Accepting these terms

When you create an account, these terms and the privacy notice are shown to you and you must tick a box to accept them; we record which version you accepted and the date. If we change them in a way that affects your rights, we ask you to accept the new version before you post again. Reading the site without an account is also subject to these terms.

Minimum age

You must be at least 16 years old to create an account or post a comment. If you are younger, please do not create one. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 16, we delete the account and its comments.

Accounts

An account is optional and free. You are responsible for keeping your password to yourself. You can delete your account at any time from the account page, and deletion is immediate and permanent.

Your comments stay yours

You keep ownership of what you write. By posting you give us permission to store, display and distribute the comment on this site and to remove it under the rules above — nothing more. We do not sell comments, use them in advertising, or license them to anyone else. You can delete your own comment at any time; if replies hang from it, the text is replaced by a note that it was deleted so the conversation still reads. Deleting your account deletes your comments with it.

When something goes wrong

We may hide, remove or decline to publish a comment, and restrict or close an account, when the rules above are broken or the law requires it. We aim to act proportionately: a single bad comment is not usually a reason to close an account. Where it is reasonable and lawful to do so we will tell you what was removed and why, and you can reply to that message to object; if we got it wrong, we put it back. Reports from other readers are reviewed by a person before an account is restricted.
